Stop bullying. It’s the law! Malden Public Schools Social Studies Department Generation Citizen Project Created by Malden High School Students Sociology Semester Course Ms. Brown’s Period 1

Our Topic… Students chose the topic of bullying following the recent tragic death of Phoebe Prince, a high school student who was bullied to death in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

Malden High Mission Statement… “demonstrate respect for all people and cultures.” “solve personal and social problems in an appropriate manner.” “create a social climate for open and meaningful discussion.”

Our Objectives: To define bullying. To inform high school students of the dangers of bullying. To survey students about bullying at Malden High School and present findings. To give students tools for dealing with bullying.

Our Project…. Students administered over 200 surveys to 9-12 th graders at Malden High School….

As a result of their research, students created a presentation to be implemented on May 14 th for th graders. Statistics from MHS gathered from surveys. Frontline video clip of the Ryan Halligan story in Tools for students to deal with bullying. The program will include:

The Ryan Halligan Story…

What is Bullying? The law defines bullying as…. “the repeated use by a perpetrator of a written, verbal, or electronic expression, or physical act of gesture…directed at a victim that causes physical or emotional harm or damage to the victim’s property; places the victim in reasonable fear or harm to himself or of damage to his property; [or] creates a hostile environment at school.”

In other words… Bullying is a series of harmful acts that one person or a group of people do to another person, who is hurt emotionally or physically by the acts. It is dangerous, and can cause serious harm…

What is Cyber-Bullying? “bullying through the use of technology or any electronic means.” This may include: Texting Facebook Myspace AIM

The Bullying Law Each school district, including charter schools and private schools are to provide instruction on bullying prevention in the curriculum! All of these schools also are required to install an intervention program with the staff, volunteers, law enforcement agency, etc.

Consequences of the Law A school principal can: Initiate criminal charges that may be taken against the bully. Take disciplinary action within the school. Notify the parents or guardians of the bully. Notify the parents or guardians of the bullied. Take action to stop the bullying.
