2 CYBER BULLYING IS… Cyberbullying is the act of harming or harassing via information technology networks in a repeated and deliberate manner. Cyberbullying is the use of cell phones, instant messaging, e- mail, chat rooms or social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to harass, threaten or intimidate someone. Also known as: ‘Electronic Bullying’ & ‘Online Social Cruelty’

Poor relationships with teachers Physical: Hitting, Punching & Shoving Verbal: Teasing, Name calling & Gossip Nonverbal: Use of gestures & Exclusion CYBERBULLYING ANONYMOUS Occurs off school property Good relationships with teachers Fear loss of technology privileges

5 CYBER BULLYING TYPES “Flaming’: Online fights using electronic messages with angry and vulgar language “Harassment”: Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages “Cyber stalking”: Repeatedly sending messages that include threats of harm or are highly intimidating. Engaging in other on-line activities that make a person afraid for his or her own safety “Denigration”: ‘Insulting’ someone online. Sending or posting cruel gossip or rumors about a person to damage his or her reputation or friendships

6 CYBER BULLYING TYPES “Impersonation”: Pretending to be someone else and sending or posting material online that makes that person look bad, gets that person in trouble or danger, or damages that person’s reputation or friendships “Outing and Trickery”: Sharing someone’s secret or embarrassing information online. Tricking someone into revealing secrets or embarrassing information which is then shared online “Exclusion”: Intentionally excluding someone from an on-line group, like a ‘buddy list’ {Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D., Director of the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use}

Who May Be Involved: School Counselor Principal Resource Officer Police Attorney (School or Private) Superintendent School Limits: Schools have policies against bullying Civil Law Limits: Cyber bullying may also meet standards for ‘institutional offences’ (wrongdoings)

Focus on the Educational Purpose Clear Policy that is Well-Communicated to Students Safe Internet Places for Younger Students Education About the Safe and Responsible Use Supervision and Monitoring Appropriate Discipline Technical Aspect: Block inappropriate internet site

School college should provide safe internet to their student Should enforce appropriate tools for protecting students personal information over network Should control inappropriate sites and ports Can use cache for speed and efficiency as students are of common interest

15 Ethical Issues: Developing responsible internet citizens
Powers Comes with Responsibility Golden rule: Treat people the way you hope to be treated.  Don’t spread gossip Keep private information private. Stand up and speak out against cyberbullying. Think of Future No illegal torrent No eavesdropping over internet
