AQS – who is it for? THE PUBLIC It is a document from the Board to its public. It is NOT a board assurance document.

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 Key learning point Involve and engage the public, patients and staff upfront

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 AQS – overcoming challenges Meet challenge of writing for the public Think about styles and different formats Avoid jargon/abbreviations Avoid duplication with other reports as far as possible Ensure use of appropriate signposting

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 Breadth v brevity – aim for 20 pages Not too hospital focussed Ensure coverage from primary, community & mental health care Ensure coverage of third sector input and other providers/partners

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 Get the balance between process v outcome Include more targeted improvement priorities – aligned with 3 year plans

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 ‘Building’ the AQS Make it an iterative process NOT a year end activity Build from directorate/locality level up Consider producing service level AQS’s Clear Board engagement/sign off Get wider stakeholder involvement/ endorsement

Annual Quality Statement – Next steps for 2014/15 Immediate Next Steps Too little guidance v too much guidance! National consistency v local flexibility Needs to set the context Needs to include a look back and a look forward ACTION: Develop a shared view on revised guidance Issued from the Forum, rather than Government
