Outline What is the AKN History of the AKN About the nodes and tools** Why work with the AKN? AKN nodes supporting partnerships How can we help the IMBCR? The new AKN2

Acknowledgments The new AKN3 Bird Conservation Network

About Point Blue Formerly PRBO Conservation Science, founding member of the AKN The new AKN4

What is the problem opportunity

AKN v1 Origins Asilomar PIF (2002) session about organizing avian data resources, gather data in one place Meeting in CLO with museum experts (Darwin Core) to help guide (2005) NSF grant (2006) to create and implement exchange format (create network a.k.a. AKN) Point Blue role: help create exchange format, invent the “node” (what are the big pieces needed) The new AKN

AKN v1 NSF grant products Bird Monitoring Data Exchange (BMDE) (show on-line) Data nodes CADC, eBird, NatureCounts, RMBO ADC, MWADC, AvianKnowledgeNorthwest, LaMNA, WHIN, PFSS Data centralization These outcomes initiated a cultural shift in bird conservation Look ma!

AKN v1: the first cultural shift ++ = DONE! NOPE! Data still in laptop! ++ = DONE! + First paradigm shift: share the data

AKN v1: the second cultural shift MIDWEST US MWADC Midwest Coordinated Bird Monitoring

AKN v1: Not enough Costly Not fully encouraging data sharing Not helping our mission and vision directly …But we did get something that is proving to be the right answer

AKN v2: Decision Support Systems a.k.a. AKN nodes The new AKN11 Systems to: capture, curate, analyze and publish data (David will tell more) More: bringing together data + knowledge and expertise Thereby: Enabling learning processes (David will tell more)

12 AKN Node tools data visualization & analysis Bring your data to the node and you can do stuff like this on-line with a few clicks…

AKN Node tools Map-based data visualization

AKN Node tools Report cards

AKN Node tools Climate change impacts

Why participate in the AKN? You should share your data because… You get immediate benefits (see & analyze your data on-line) You are being open/transparent about your work (others can replicate your work) You enable best-science practices for management (management using newest standards based on your data!) help answer other scientific problems (think climate change!)

AKN nodes support partnerships Criteria for an AKN partnership: Key conservation problem (e.g., the MCBMP has: grassland bird conservation partnership) Key questions (e.g. What is the best management action [easements, restoration, do-nothing] to increase populations of prairie chicken?) Key players to bring expertise to solve problems Key datasets to bring relevant information Key managers to use the tools developed The new AKN17

AKN nodes supporting leadership What we call leadership: A team of people (a partnership) Understand problems at multiple scales and from various (partner’s) perspectives Can reach out to bring in the key players, key datasets, appropriate technology Open and collaborative Provide answers and guidance where and when needed The new AKN18

IMBCR has the imprint of a partnership the AKN can support IMBCR has the leadership that would make the partnership thrive and grow The AKN can provide technology, data, and knowledge to help the IMBCR partnership (David will expand on this) The IMBCR has already developed fantastic decision support models; e.g., we can help automate analysis and delivery – models and technology are then shared throughout the AKN (IMBCR leads!) …how can the AKN help IMBCR? AKN nodes supporting leadership

Thank you!
