2 Scaling is inherent to business … and to social “ Scaling to achieve impact ” – BUSINESS LENS - growing the business so that it can sell more products and services, often in diverse or geographically spread markets, where: “more” is better “better” means more profits “everywhere” is synonym of success “ Achieving impact at scale ” – SOCIAL LENS - replicating or sharing good ideas, good processes. It can apply to spreading the idea or process to diverse or geographically spread communities, where: focus is on the outcome (social good) not on profits sharing information & commitment among those interested is key to the outcome local partnerships and stakeholders benefit Scaling or scaling-up occur in both the business and social sectors but differ in the perspective (the lens) through which it is viewed, and the impact they seek to achieve

3 Change is about doing - Transformation is about being How is social sector scaling different? Scaling in the social lens is much more than a change, it is systemic, it transforms a reality OUTCOMES Focus is on outcomes (expected results to transform a reality of a community). SHARING INFORMATION Community interested in the transformation needs to be part of the scaling (not a one way process). CUSTOMIZATION Local adaption and customizing is key to achieve desired outcome. CORE VALUES A straight foward and clear discussion should be held about core values. Clearly define negotiable and non negotiable values. COMMUNICATION Is a core value, leads to a healthy team building based on trust. COLLABORATION Partnerships can help adaptation. KEY CONCEPTS TO SCALING IN THE SOCIAL SECTOR

4 NURTURE GUIDE Different approaches to scaling related to the Action Spectrum Scaling is achieved through different approaches, that may be appropriate based on the context of what is to be “scaled”. We will analyze the 3 approaches under the Control, Guide, Nurture model CONTROL - CONTROL – Is the approach that needs to be followed to be valid, such as a health intervention based on a scientific evidence and principles. - GUIDE – Is the approach that needs to be generally followed in order to have commonality among pieces that fit together and leverage a greater good. - NURTURE – Is the approach that leads to a shared vision or outcome but then can be brought about in very different ways.

5 Examples on different approaches to scaling Let´s share 3 examples on different approaches in scaling, where one action domain (control, guide and nurture) dominates the scaling procedures. 6 Risk Management applied to social scaling Organizations aim to create value in the environment they operate in. Scaling is a tool to expand the created value to wider audiences to improve their lives. Risk Management is redefined through investment in social innovation. Scaling is an investment in social innovation, which means the Scaling plan will be succesfully implemented if analyzed under the Risk Management lens. RISK MANAGEMENT ASSESMENT IN SCALING 1 - IDENTIFY RISKS 2 – PRIORITIZE RISKS 3 – BALANCE OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS 4 – MAXIMIZE REALIZATION OF OPPORTUNITIES

7 Ci2i global: our own scaling story goes on The Ci2i global team is building a marketplace to co-create and assist collaborative approaches and system level thinking to help bring about the change needed in today´s world. Our talk on a collective impact approach on scaling began internally in October 2011. In January 2012 we opened the discussion to “we_b2” lab participants in Brussels. Together we are taking the scaling issue to a next stage. And now, with the sample questions below, the ci2i global team wants to continue this collective thinking and usher this group of talented changemakers toward new systems, to lead to a better world for all of us. CREATING IMPACT What are your options for creating impact? TO SCALE OR NOT TO SCALE? Why might scaling be – or not be - a good option for you? NEGOTIABLE & NON NEGOTIABLES What is core to the idea you want to replicate or share and what can be customized? PARTNERS Do you have partners? How could collaboration lead to greater impact? STARTING WITH A STEADY STEP What would the profile/criteria of an ideal pilot ‘scaling’ project look like? - Actors, resources, relationships, values, mapping.
