PRAYER AND LITURGY THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH

WHY PRAY? What has prayer ever done for me? Recall our earlier lesson on sin:  Why would you settle for less than the best?

WHAT IS LITURGY Greek: “The work or duty of the people” “The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows.” ( Vat II: Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10 ) Not just Mass – any time we ‘officially’ pray together!

WHAT LITURGY IS NOT…. A time to sleep A time to visit with friends A time to be alone A concert

WHAT WE DO Liturgy is what we do...therefore it is who we are! Just like the consistent ethic, we have a consistent life:  Prayer  Worship Actions of LOVE! Can a date be good even if you think the movie is bad?

RITUAL We physically spend time with Jesus whenever we are together The Liturgy is made of stories and actions which put us into direct contact with God. Jesus becomes present to us in the Word, and at Mass in the Eucharist Gestures, actions, and words connect us to sacred things They also connect us back to everyone through history right back to Jesus The Book of Revelation shows us the vision of the heavenly liturgy in which we participate

PRAYER Us time, face time, what ever you want to call it Personal; just like the community must connect to God so we as individuals must connect to God. How do we pray? Just like the community does: Words Thoughts Music Scripture Poetry Quiet
