INSURANCE WHY? – Protect students – Protect the institution – We are a litigious society MANDATORY OR OPTIONAL? – Also valuable for study abroad data collection (and institutional support)

INSURANCE STANDARD HEALTH AND ACCIDENT POLICY – Many companies offer policies that may be “competitive” for groups – Should cover: Mental health Dental care if related to injury Accidental death and dismemberment Medical evacuation Repatriation of bodily remains

INSURANCE STANDARD HEALTH AND ACCIDENT POLICY – Provider could offer: Medical counseling and referrals Travel and safety advice

INSURANCE STANDARD HEALTH AND ACCIDENT POLICY – Will have certain exclusions: Routine examinations, nutritional advice, telephone consultation or treatment Routine dental, optical, auditory Foot, fertility, sexual dysfunction Acts of war, riot, insurrection, etc. Chronic pain Physical therapy Cosmetic surgery, sex change Occurrences in competitive sports, skydiving, scuba diving, etc Occurrences in unlicensed aircraft

INSURANCE STANDARD HEALTH AND ACCIDENT POLICY – Issues to review with provider: Deductible? How much? Pre-existing conditions: Some? All? Time frame? Policy period: full months or specific days? Maximum benefits: specific losses and/or aggregate Choice of provider? Preauthorization required for certain treatments? Continued coverage for claim after return home? Dependent coverage? Significantly higher premiums? “Bedside visit” coverage? Coverage subrogated to other coverage? Coverage for faculty leaders? staff?
