10th GRADE - Grade Level

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang Three interwoven stories: – the Monkey King, – Jin, a young Chinese-American teen who has just moved to the suburbs from San Francisco trying to fit in, and – Danny, a white American who is more than he seems

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, one girl fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, 9 October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price when she was shot in the head at point-blank range. This is her story.

Looking for Alaska by John Green Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words–and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps. Soon to be a movie.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson Melinda’s life was fine until the end-of-summer party before freshman year. Now her old friends won’t talk to her, and people she doesn’t even know hate her. She doesn’t speak now, and she’s trying not to think about what happened the night of that party, but the threat is still out there.
