7/3/ Skimming  To quickly identify the main ideas of a text  Faster than normal reading  You might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations  Seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension  Works well to find dates, names, and places  (page 56-58)

Scanning

7/3/ Scanning  A technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary  Search for the key words or ideas  You know what you’re looking for  Look for the author’s use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps,  Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or colour  (page 60-61)

7/3/ Comprehension Skills  Learn to recognize the question type, because if you know what the question is asking you to do, it will be easy to answer it.  Pay attention to what you are reading. Skill- building exercises like skimming, scanning, and reading for specific information will help you to focus on the passage.  Pay attention to the first sentence. It usually gives main idea of the passage.  Read the question first, when you read, you can look for answers.  Make an Intelligent Guess if you are not sure of the answers.
