The Seven Years’ War ended in 1763 Great Britain gained control: Canada, All lands east of Mississippi River, and Florida Spain gained control: Louisiana Territory, Mississippi River delta, and city of New Orleans

France is no longer a threat, so Spanish officials begin to inspect the major settlements in Tejas.

The King’s Inspector’s recommendations: Abandon all Tejas missions, except San Antonio and Goliad; Move all 500 Spanish settlers in East Texas to San Antonio PROBLEM! East Texas settlers do not want to move! Too Hot! Too Dry!

Further Spanish settlement was hindered by Comanche and Apache raiders! slowed down

Permission is denied to those who wish to return to their preferred homes in East Texas.

But in 1779, without permission, Spanish settlers are lead north to East Texas timberlands to found Nacogdoches, near old Mission Guadalupe. But Spain now has no control over this distant area !
