The Circulatory System Essential Question: What is the function of the circulatory system? What is the pathway of blood through the heart? What’s the difference between pulmonary and systemic circulation? How are the three types of blood vessels different?

Functions of the circulatory system:  Brings oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells  Fights infection  Regulates body temperature

The Heart <3  Serves as a pump to make sure blood gets to all parts of the body  4 chambers  The right side receives blood from the body, and pumps it to the lungs  The left side receives blood from the lungs, and pumps it to the body

Deoxyenated- blood carrying no oxygen Deoxyenated- blood carrying no oxygen –Already gave it away to the body Oxygenated- blood carrying oxygen Oxygenated- blood carrying oxygen –Hasn’t given it to the body yet

Circulation through the body  1. Pulmonary circulation Blood from the body (no oxygen)  R side of the heart  lungs  Blood trades gases with the lungs  CO 2 goes from blood to lungs, O 2 is absorbed from lungs  Blood returns to the L side of the heart
