Presentation transcript:

 Stress – force that pushes or pulls rock Tension Compression Shearing  Fault – Break in Earth’s crust where plate movement occurs Normal Reverse Strike-Slip

 1. Divergent  2. Convergent  3. Transform

 Movement – APART  Type of Stress – Tension  Type of Fault – Normal (hanging wall slips downward)

 Landforms Continental/Continental: rift valley Oceanic/Oceanic: Mid-ocean ridge

 Movement – TOGETHER  Type of Stress – Compression  Type of Fault – Reverse (Hanging wall moves over footwall)

Continental/Continental: Mountains (neither plate is more dense than the other, so subduction does not occur and the land is squeezed together into a mountain range) Oceanic/Oceanic or Oceanic/Continental: Deep ocean trench – oceanic crust is very dense, and leads to subduction

 Movement – Slide past each other  Type of Stress – Shearing  Type of Fault –Strike-Slip (Rocks move sideways with little up or down motion)  Landforms (Events) – EARTHQUAKE!!! (although earthquakes can occur at any plate boundary)
