Presentation transcript:

7 th Grade Value Color Portrait Format the paper for framing later, or draw frame. Decide if you want a horizontal or vertical format. Lightly draw your layout, composing the space with the big shapes. Some shapes can leave the space and invade the frame. Then draw all contours with right brain seeing. Don’t do pencil shading. You can repeat things (plants?) if it helps you compose the space well.

Year 2010 objectives Using color tints and shades, mechanical color schemes, and blending acrylic paints to show abstraction and dimension

Contrast = complementary Tetrad = double split complementary

heme2/index-en.html Make a (color) printout: Press Alt + PrtScr Open a Word document and type name Paste color scheme into the document Print

Look at your color scheme printout Look at the top right part to see the colors of your color scheme. See the color wheel to see how to make your color. Get the colors that you will need to make your colors. Make your colors. These are your colors to use.

Acrylic painting supplies Your paper Paint shirt (Segal cabinet) if needed Acrylic paint brushes palette and lid, and craft stick Quart baggie and permanent marker 2 buckets not over half full of water Magazine (Bearden cabinet) Paper towels Drops of acrylic paint: colors + white and black + retarder, if used

Make sure that your lid fits your palette well. Tape name label on your lid. Wipe off the craft stick after you use it before you put it in another color. At the end of class, put drops of water in your palette before you put your lid on. Stack palettes.

Clean the brushes well. Rinse off the paint, then rub soap into the bristles to make sure all the paint comes out.

After you wash the brush out, test with a paper towel to make sure all the paint is cleaned out.

With paint…Use tempera paint inside random shapes to show depth Do an exercise with your color scheme Make as many shapes as are in your color scheme Show your colors fully graded in value Stay in your lines Get the practice exercise right before starting to paint on your main painting.

Acrylic exercise Draw shapes make one of your color scheme colors put a small dab of paint on a magazine also put white and a very small dab of black add a bit of retarder gel to all 3 get an acrylic brush paint quickly because the paint dries fast…add water as needed

load brush with bright color paint in the middle leave color on the brush and pick up a bit of white Mix in the white and paint onto the shape Change the value gradually. When you see an abrupt change, work it, maybe with more water to make it even. by the time you get to the edge of your shape, you should be almost completely white Stay in your lines! Turn your paper as needed to keep the tip of your brush against the edge of the shape.

Wash out the brush completely. Test on a paper towel to make sure all the paint is out. Mix red and a very small amount of black at a time… the black is very strong Paint on the other side of the bright color darken the value gradually until you have almost black on the other end.

This year’s work Blending acrylic paint

7 th Grade: Shading with color value View with a light source Use color value with paint to add depth to some or all shapes, turning them into forms Show highlight, shading, shadows, and reflected light. (the lightest value should be toward the imagined light source. Review Artrageous program CD

As you paint... Do not mix these colors together. That makes new colors that are not in your scheme. You can, of course, use and add all the black and white that you want. They are neutrals, not found on the color wheel.

You can also show pattern and texture with value…

Next year, let each table take a photo of the model with an agreed- on light source after contours are drawn.

finishing Be sure to finish the eyes. Use colored pencil to bring out details or add texture. Frame using glue sparingly Sign your first name and last initial in an appropriate place on the front.
