AFRICAN ENVIRONMENT ISSUES BY AMARI MITCHELL

WATER POLLUTION IN AFRICA -Due to urbanization, oil spills, and coal mining Africa has an increasing rise in water pollution. -Urbanization Since many people are moving toward Ural areas sewage and waste products have increased and people keep putting the waste into what little water they have -Oil Spills Since high levels of oil are transported by South Africa there have been a few accidents that have polluted the water. -Coal Mining Since the miners mine chemicals out of the underground they sometimes hit ground water and pollute it.

AIR POLLUTION IN AFRICA -Many of the energy Africans use is low grade fuels that have caused major air pollution there. Deforestation and slash and burn only add to the high levels of pollution there.

DISEASES FROM POOR WATER -There have been many diseases from poor water quality in Africa. Some of these diseases are: -Diarrhea -Arsenicosis -Cholera -Fluorosis -Guinea worm disease -HIV/AIDS -Intestinal worms -Malaria -Typhoid

POOR SOIL, DROUGHT, AND DEFORESTATION -The main causes of deforestation is from areas becoming more and more populated. Since many people are moving towards Ural areas the demand for land increased so people have to take down the forest to get new land. -People in Africa have suffered from poor soil quality because they have been farming on the same land for plenty of years and each time making it less and less fertile -Many drought in Africa have been caused by the climate variability which involves seasonal rainfall and other factors

DESERTIFICATION, DROUGHT, SLASH/BURN -Desertification is a process when once arable land starts turning into desert ruining plants and animals habitat. In addition to the loss of habitat people also have less land too farm on and make their crops. -Many drought in Africa have been caused by the climate variability which involves seasonal rainfall and other factors -Many people in Africa use the process of slash and burn. They cut and burn down trees to clear land for farming, cattle, and their other personal needs. Although the strategy benefits them it doesn’t benefit the plant and animals that were once living there. For example, when you cut down a tree you also take away an animals home.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN KENYA -Many people in Kenya aren’t having a chance to get a fair education. For example, the women in the country are being prepared for marriage while all the men there go to school. Even though the women get dowry after the marry someone it still isn’t fair. - Kenya’s literacy rate is 87% which accounts mostly for the men who literacy rate is higher than the women there.

GOVERNMENT INSTABILITY -Many governments in Africa have become very unstable due to all the political and environmental issues there. -War Since some of the countries in Africa are at war most of the money used to help the country is going towards the military -Environmental Issues Due to all the environmental issues the people in Africa have faced constant problems. For example, the government has to deal with droughts while at the same time deal with pollution.

AIDS & FAMINE -Due to the lack of resources many people in Africa have suffered from Aids and Famine. -AIDS Many people in Africa get AIDS from the poor water quality there. This disease has killed many people living in Africa. -Famine Due to the growing amount of less arable land and poor water quality many people are being killed from starvation as well as aids
