PLC Leadership Academy Session 2: February 16, 2016 Jeremy Koselak Secondary RtI Coordinator

Agenda and Objectives Welcome New Faces Quick review of credit options Establish norm # 1: end on time (6:00) Tonight's Objectives  Review, check for understanding  Identify Cultural Shifts in a PLC environment  Clarifying the What of rich data conversations  Observe and evaluate a PLC in action  Power of Common (short cycle) Formative Assessments

Paperwork and Such  Earning Credit (Course Expectations & Syllabus)  CDE (free) or D11 ($, flexible, up to 3hrs)  5 x 1.5 =7.5hrs, or ½ credit  With monthly HW, goes to at least 1, up to 3*  Learn By Doing (application & reading each month)  *3 credit option: Project = Binder & Site Visit/Observation with Feedback

Celebrations, progress  Share with your table one specific step forward you made this month regarding PLCs.  Each table share out 1 or 2 as celebrations.

Check for understanding: What Should Effective Teams Collaborate About? Highly effective teams collaborate to:  clarify essential outcomes by grade or course.  develop common formative (short-cycle) assessments.  establish targets, goals and benchmarks.  analyze assessment results (to what end?)  plan for intervention by name and need.  improve instructional strategies.  innovate responsibly based on action research.

Necessary Shifts Look at document, "Cultural Shifts in a PLC"  Check/highlight the most challenging ones facing your team and/or school.  Recorder captures 1 from each person  Spokesperson shares a few that best capture the conversation at the table

Why? Leave nothing to chance if we hope to shrink the Opportunity/Achievement Gap PLCs best empower schools to collectively and systematically provide the extra time and support students need to learn at a high level, graduate, and reach their potential. The team works together to improve as individuals and to collectively ensure a guaranteed and viable curriculum.

Article Debrief: “How PLCs Do Data Right.” (Dufour) Using evidence from the text(s)* record and then share with a partner your reflections about  Aha’s from the article  ideas/culture shifts you want to focus on in your team/school  what actions you aspire to implement this semester  Take back to your school to share with your PLC team.

Reflection point from article “Rather than listing what students need to do to correct the problem, educators need to address what they can do better collectively. To engage fully in the PLC process, a team must use evidence of student learning to inform and improve the professional practice of its members.”

5 min BREAK Upon Return… 1. Pick up observation form. 2. Provide your PLC meeting time(s) on the list (same grade/content)

Common (Formative, Short Cycle) Assessment  Why do experts consider the CFA cycle a “high leverage” strategy?  Consider norms by Erkens  Consider REAL criteria and tips from B.Ferriter  Potential sources to utilize  This is the homework for the month—learn by doing!

Prepare for Protocol use…  Thinking ahead about what you hope to do with the results**  Share some protocols to consider… Thinking about the DuFour article, what should a good data/student work protocol lead to?

Observing Watch the video from a ES model (6.5 min) Using evidence from the Observation Form  Point to specific areas observed that demonstrate effective teaming  What could your team learn from this video?  Any constructive feedback?

Homework for March 15 1) Read the pieces on writing common assessments and using protocols. 2) Develop and administer a short, Common Formative Assessment with your team and analyze the data with a protocol (to what end?) (2+). Bring a evidence of your work to the next class* 3) Begin setting up a PLC binder.* (3+) Let your team know about the possibility of a site visit in the near future.
