Teacher Leader BRETT CROUSE

Introduction About Me ◦Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, emphasis in Exercise Science ◦Minor in Sociology ◦CSUSM Men’s soccer ◦Inaugural team member in 2006 ◦Captain from ◦Assistant Coach in 2011 season ◦Background in coaching and motivating others Position of Application ◦I am applying for the position of Lead Teacher due to its parallels with my personal goals and previous experience. ◦Through this position I am expecting and expected to create positive collaboration and growth within myself, the students, and staff at this school. ◦With my background in coaching, it is my goal to foster intrinsic motivation to succeed within each student and team that I work with.

Philosophy on Education The coach is first of all a teacher – John Wooden As a student, player and coach, my philosophy is derived from my past experiences in these three areas. My goal as an educator is to ensure that what students learn is processed and applied to individual student’s personal interests, lives, and goals. Facilitating students to be intrinsically motivated (Newman, 2013); to own and be responsible for their own learning is difficult, but will provide them with the key to success for their future Use my experience, both success and failures, to guide students towards their own personal path of success Focus on preparation, practice, assess (Lopez, 2013).

Classroom Management Involved students in the discussion and implementation of the classroom rules to empower participation and accountability amongst peers Include my personal expectations of the classroom rules and expectations to ensure the discussion and implementation is geared in the direction Explain why they are involved in this process, and how it benefits them This process helps to enable our classroom to maximize time together (Newman, 2013). Five items that are important to me in classroom management and expectations are: 1.Respect 2.Enjoy Yourself 3.Push Your Limits 4.Punctuality 5.Team Work

School Models Important to flip the classroom (Newman, 2013) Focus on preparation at home to maximize classroom discussions and practice Puts the onus on the student Allows for discussion and practice of all subjects/topics to take place in the effectively and appropriately set up classroom environment that students feel comfortable in Maximizes time use for working with peers and teacher in understanding and finding answers Allows teacher to assist students in application of lesson to personal lives Use of technology Important for students to be able to use written, oral and technological means of communication now and in the future (International). Facilitates flipping a classroom Enjoying the use of technology in learning will help students stay engaged

Effective Lesson Planning Backwards Design Approach 1.Use Common Core Standards as destination for learning ◦“Begin with the end in mind” (Newman, 2013). 2.Design assessments which will help teachers understand student’s comprehension of subject ◦How do we make sure they are on their way to the destination? 3.Design projects and activities for students to discover the subject on their way to preparing for assessments. ◦How do we get the students on the right path?

Assessment Test Results directly effect students self-esteem (Newman, 2013). Involve student in assessments ◦They take pride in their scores ◦Understand their strengths Formative Assessment – Assessment FOR Learning (JCheek) ◦Used to feed the system as an investment for improvement ◦Can be quantitative or qualitative Summative Assessment - Assessment OF Learning (JCheek) ◦High-stakes testing (ex. State Assessments, District Benchmarks, etc.) ◦Longer-term, and indirectly effect the classroom

Professional Learning Communities Through this position I am expecting and expected to create positive collaboration and growth within myself, the students, and staff at this school. As a Leader and Teacher it is imperative that we (myself, and the rest of our staff) continue to grow and learn beyond the classroom (Newman, 2013). ◦Teachers make the most impact on fellow teachers (Newman, 2013) The most effective teachers continue to learn outside of the classroom on their own and from others around them Using my experience in sports and business environments, creating a team culture is imperative to exponential growth and success!
