 Advising students in-person and via regarding degree plans, course selection, curricular requirements (GE, Major, Minor), major exploration, career plans, etc.  Understanding University and College policies and procedures, dates and deadlines that impact a student’s academic plans.  Instructing a University Survey course  Communicating with colleagues in departments and across university, Meetings with various constituents (fellow office staff, faculty within department)  Referrals to University offices  Participating in New Student Orientation The job of an academic advisor typically entails: What does a “successful” academic advisor look like?

 Recruitment  Marketing/Communications  Department course scheduling  Data retrieval and interpretation  Accreditation  Academic program administration  Transfer and study abroad course evaluation  Student programming Many advisors are also expected to participate at varying levels in:

What can get in the way of an advisor being “successful”?  Scope creep and competing demands for their time  Institutional barriers: policies and procedures that impact the advisor/student interaction  Communication inconsistency, Information overload  Misperceptions from constituents about advisor role Obstacles on the road to advisor effectiveness:
