Interaction w/students “Whole Student” Untapped resource Different relationship Why Advisors?

“ I believe the primary benefit of satellite advising is to offer students another venue in which to seek out advising services. It raises awareness about the importance of academic advising when students make difficult or timely decisions. It also encourages students to utilize and refer our services in the future, either by visiting our satellite location or main office. Quality advising has been linked to improved retention rates and better navigation of the resources and services available on campus.” - Chris Armstrong, General Curriculum Advisor Why Advisors?

General Curriculum (Office Hours) – Undergrad Library Professional Development Association (ILLiAAC) – University Library Avenues of Collaboration

Office Hours @ UGL one advisor one day a week for 2 hours services: - major, career or academic issues - available resources or services on campus - university policies and procedures - contact info for people and departments on campus General Curriculum

“Typically, I provide a referral service for students to an appropriate major advisor or department on campus. Because each college and major has their own set of specific requirements, I do not provide course scheduling services for students. Students frequently have questions about pre- professional interests (like pre-medicine, pre-law, etc.). During the spring semester, I saw a similar number of declared and undeclared students.” - Chris Armstrong, General Curriculum Advisor

ILLiAAC professional association 65 members open to academic advisors, advising staff, and anyone interested in issues concerning academic advising Professional Development
