National diversity strands  __ % of the population is gay, __ % Treasury estimate  __ % of the population has a disability – 6.7m  Females comprise __ % of the population,  Transgendered people make up __ % of the population, possibly up to four times that number undeclared

BME statistics  __ % of the population, > __ % of GVA  __ % of labour market growth over the current period from BME communities (Strategy Unit, 2003)  Exponential growth in BME student numbers __ % in FE, & schools, __ % in HE  Globalisation makes ‘diversity competence’ essential for current & future employability, and social cohesion >2220

The Network for Black* Professionals The NBP is a social justice, not-for-profit, social enterprise that exists to promote the benefits of ethnic and cultural workforce diversity for the local, regional and national economies of the UK, and to increase the representation of black professionals at all levels of the UK workforce * Black – the term ‘Black’ is used to refer to members of African, African Caribbean, Asian and any other visible minority ethnic communities who may face racism

Black Leadership Initiative ®  Professional development & training arm of the NBP  Unequivocal emphasis on BME career progression  Key recommendation of Commission for Black Staff in FE (2001) which was established following the publication of Macpherson Report (1999)  Practical, positive action, high impact, demanding  42%-70% of participants realise career progression within 2 years

State schools  2.08m BME pupils (25.4%) of 8.2m aggregate  27.6% of primary & 23.2% of secondary BME  Currently circa 270 BME primary heads (1.5%)  We could have 2700 (2430 more)  Currently circa 74 BME secondary heads (2.2%)  We could have 501 (427 more)  3.4% BME primary teachers  6.4% BME secondary teachers

Further Education  22% of students from UK BME communities  8.5% of all staff are UK BME  8.7% of FE teachers are UK BME  7.4% of Other Managers are UK BME  3.8% of Senior Managers are UK BME  4.6% of FE Principals are UK BME

Higher Education  14.4% UK population BME  20.2% of students from UK BME communities  6.2% of all staff are UK BME  6.7% of academic staff are BME  2% (4.8%) of HoDs/professors are UK BME  1 VC of 133 UK universities (0.75%) is BME – no data available for other leadership tiers

NBP/Ofsted Shadowing  156 Inspection Shadowing participants  42% promotion/progression rate  20 new BME Head teachers  20 new BME Deputy heads  14 new BME Assistant heads  5 BME HoDs  6 other posts

Key Challenges  Mismatch between BME demographics and employment figures  Talent management threat  BME under-representation in civil society  Demand-led provision = workforce diversity  Projections for 2020 workforce a major risk for companies & UK prosperity  No robust strategy to address the issue  Lack of leadership & political push
