Diocesan Board of Education Summer 2015 Guildford Diocesan Guidelines: Staff training (2)

For this session, each teacher will need: Curriculum overview for their key stage Your new long term plan ‘How a unit is set out’ The ‘big ideas’ booklet A Beginner’s Guide to Enquiry in RE A sample unit to work with Proforma for lesson planning (your school version or sample provided)

In the previous session, we: set the context for revision looked at the curriculum overview and explored how it fits into the ‘bigger picture’ of RE created a long term plan for our RE

In this part of the session we will: explore the structure of the new units reflect on the principles of enquiry-based learning ‘crack open’ a unit and use it to plan a series / block of lessons

A framework of ‘big ideas’ Other faiths Easter The Church Jesus Christ Jesus Christ God Living as a Christian Living as a Christian Christmas The Bible Optional units Early Years Each part of the puzzle represents a different ‘big idea’ Look at the ‘big ideas’ booklet Where do units you’ll be teaching ‘fit in’ with the ‘big idea’?

How is a unit set out? – top section

How is a unit set out? – bottom section

How is a unit set out? – middle section engage enquire & explore evaluate express human experience making connections religious context teacher-modelling pupil-led key question personal ‘critical’ / “So what?” response to learning creative cross-curricular What’s in the learning journey is a starting point: you can go your own way!

The enquiry process: a few thoughts This process of enquiry is our own ‘version’ Diocese of Edmunsbury and Ipswich have been hugely helpful (check out their website) Other syllabi make teachers do a lot more of the work A work in progress Lesson plans for some units MAY follow….

A framework of ‘big ideas’ Key Stage 1 Y1: What is the Bible about? Y1: What is the Bible about? Y2: Why is the Bible an important book? What’s the ‘big idea’ of the Bible? Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, and a guidebook for living. It is, put simply, the ‘big story’ of God and his people, starting from Creation and ending with God’s kingdom coming to earth and the renewal of all creation. Like all good books, there are unexpected twists and turns as God’s people fail to learn from their mistakes – and God puts into place the most unexpected and audacious rescue plan: one that will work, once and for all…..sending His Son Jesus as the Rescuer. And because of Jesus, every person who calls themselves a Christian now plays a part in God’s ‘big story’…. What’s the ‘big idea’ of the Bible? Have a closer look Take some time to look at the examples that you have been given. Choose one to focus on. How does the unit contribute to the ‘big idea’? How does the unit plan help deliver the Core Knowledge?

How does the enquiry help deliver the Core Knowledge? engage enquire & explore evaluate express

Breaking it down into lessons How many lessons? Blocked or not? Use the success criteria Fitting in the enquiry cycle Engage tasks throughout? The whole process in each lesson? Choosing the ‘right’ questions for enquiry (but allowing time for the others? – knowing the curriculum) Evaluating key to deepening understanding Using other curriculum areas to enhance expression (and gain extra time?!) For example…. Y3 Christmas unit

Have a go! Turn one of the units into an outline of lessons you might teach Use as many or as few of the suggested ideas as you wish, but ensure that the Core Knowledge is taken into account Feedback
