1. Background / History History: - Koblenz: Teacher education since in Rheinland-Pfalz: - Colleges of Education established after WW II - Merging / consolidation process of Colleges of Education starting in Merger of the remaining two sites (Koblenz and Landau) in 1990  University Koblenz - Landau

1. Background / History Today: One University with two campus (Koblenz and Landau;distance 150km) focal point: teacher education (primary and secondary school); 62% of students research orientation in selected areas: computer science (Koblenz), psychology (Landau) one library (organization, management software) = Koblenz-Landau University Library  „Koblenz university library“ is in fact one of two branch libraries and serves the campus Koblenz

Operating conditions 1.Library Materials Large variety of materials (teacher education !): Research literature Educational tools (e.g. games) Music Movies …. no rare book collection two special collections scientific archive of Prof. Derbolav (education, Univ. Bonn) archive „married catholic priests“

Budget / staff: Koblenz: First library professional 1962 Acquisition budget and number of FTEs resembling more College of Education than Full University e.g. University Koblenz-Landau vs. TU Kaiserslautern Students (KO: 6800) Students library: 38,5 FTE (KO: 17,5) 52 FTE acq.budget: 0,5 Mio € 1,4 Mio € Staff Koblenz librarians with university degree: 2 FTE education in library science: 8 FTE library professionals:6,5 FTE non professionals: 1 FTE

3. Services 1. Concentrating on basics: Literature acquisition for faculty and students Supplying access to materials (OPAC, reading room etc) Electronic records management Retroconversion  95% completion rate; ends in 2013 Book transport between Landau and Koblenz Interlibrary loan (within Germany) Library as a place to study / learn Scanning device for public use (for free) Computers in the library (thin clients) WLAN Group study rooms Carrels for single users

Services … with a little technical help from Regional Library Computer Center in Cologne (HBZ) operates a large cataloging database (  original and copy cataloging) organizes Interlibrary Loan hosts our institutional repository (OPUS) the Computer Service Center at Koblenz University Campus operates our servers (ILS ALEPH 500) supports our thin clients in the public area and taking advantage of the library infrastructure in Germany in general cooperation (e.g ILL, negotiations of electronic licences) Licencing activities of the German Research Foundation DFG

3. Services Out of scope / what we choose not to do library related projects / e.g. open access support, digitization subject specific services / no subject librarians product development  out of the box solutions public relations / e.g. marketing fund raising activities

4. E-Access 1. German National Research Foundation DFG: Financed several E-Book packages and Journal Backfile collections for all German Universities, see e.g. Elsevier Journal Backfiles Wiley Journal Backfiles Springer Journal Backfiles RSC E-Book collection …. 2. Funding by University Koblenz-Landau: Library budget I: selection of products/responsibility  library staff e.g. Web of Science, E-Book Packages (e.g Springer) Library budget II: responsibility  departments, institutes e.g. ACM Digital Library, IEEE CSDL, …

Additional information II German libraries: staff / levels of education Level 1: librarians with university degree (e.g. humanities, sciences, medicine, law, … ) and additional library education at libraries (training on the job) and library colleges (theory); duration: 2 years Level 2: education in library science at library colleges with additional working experience / internships in libraries; 3 years Level 3: Mostly training on the job in libraries and attending library school (no college); 3 years Level 4: Non professionals: only training on the job; no formal education
