WI Teacher Standards WI Standard 3: Teachers understand that children learn differently: The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupil, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities. WI Standard 7: Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons: The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals

Essential Questions What are the core elements of an Interdisciplinary Learning Collaborative? What is the origin of ILC? What schools currently implement the ILC design? How is the ILC pedagogy similar and different to Project Based Learning?

Learning Objectives Teachers will know... Key terms---core elements, interdisciplinary learning collaborative (ILC), project-based learning (PBL), pedagogy Seven core elements of ILCs core elements of PBL Teachers will be able to... define an interdisciplinary learning collaborative (ILC) locate schools in Wisconsin that use this pedagogy and know its origin compare and contrast an ILC with a similar pedagogy (i.e. project-based learning)

Interdisciplinary Learning Collaboratives One of the pedagogical networks recognized by the Wisconsin Innovative School Network Pedagogy was created by James Lewicki, an educational consultant, with the collaboration of the staff from the Appleton Career Academy 7 core elements- Can you identify some?

A day in the life of an ILC teacher… I am a high school science teacher who coteaches a 4 week Design Elements course with a math teacher. After teaching 2 morning seminars, I coplan with staff to ensure that our integrated curriculum is responsive to the real- world needs of my students, some of whom I have will work with throughout their entire high school career. My students spend some of their school day learning from professional partners in the community. Our school community designs the school day and yearly course content to ensure that all students get the foundational courses that they need, plus have the flexible schedule to complete community internships.

7 Core Elements of an Interdisciplinary Learning Cooperative highly integrated curriculum commitment to team teaching/collaborative planning interdisciplinary learning designs: seminars, workshops, modules, symposiums, internships, and foundation courses flexible scheduling staff stay with a student for 4 years collaborative community partnerships collaborative small school culture — respectful and responsive to the voices of the learning community

ILC schools Appleton Career Academy Wausau Engineering and Global Leadership Academy KM Perform Performance task: Research schools in small groups (5-7 min) and share out one thing you were able to find to exemplify the core elements.

Application Activity How is the ILC pedagogy similar and different to PBL?
