Energy costs – saving money Improved environmental performance – reduced CO2 Reduction of other costs Educational opportunities Legal compliance – Govt targets, CRC The low carbon schools

Target 25% reduction in CO 2 emissions and substantial cost savings by 2014, through: Capital investment to improve energy efficiency of Schools, the NCC estate and fleet, and develop new energy sources Behaviour change by staff and schools (incl. Energy Busters/ Futures/programme in schools plus corp. ’Low Carb diet’ ) Smarter procurement and management of energy use Legal compliance - s atisfying statutory obligations within the national Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) Norfolk County Council’s Carbon & Energy Reduction Programme

The CRC is a mandatory scheme aimed at improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions in large public and private sector organisations. A revision as part of the CSR 2010, the Scheme is now essentially a taxation scheme for participants. What they pay is dependant on their levels of emissions. NCC is expecting to pay up to £1M in tax per year (at £12/tonne) from April Schools will meet their liability through a top slice of the Designated School Grant. This is likely to account for the bulk of this tax. Penalties can be incurred for various aspects of non compliance at £40/tonne. Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)

How does your school perform?

CERF Renewables - Shared Savings Model – FiTs & RHI – pilot project Renewables - ESCo (Norfolk Renewables) – handling future renewables projects Funding opportunities

Be careful with respect to cold calling. Is it the best deal? Advice from the DfE and the Carbon Trust Take advantage of energy advice available – CS, NPS etc. Use the data – AMR Are you getting the best price for energy? Advice for Schools

1.Where can the most significant savings be made in my school? 2.What have we learnt from the data? 3.How can bursars with a financial remit work with other school staff and young people to enable carbon reduction? 4.Would it be useful for us to share our energy profile with others schools? What would we learn? Forum Be succinct when making a point Listen carefully Stay focussed on discussion questions
