5 Primary education level The primary education level can be divided into : Pre-school education which is offered by kindergartens Compulsory Primary Education which is offered by Elementary schools.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia6 Children attend Nursery school for two years, from four to six, as a preparatory stage which contributes to integrating the children in the Primary school system. The primary school helps children familiarise themselves with abstract thought and master the written and spoken language. Attendance is compulsory and lasts six years, (includes levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6), from the age of 6 to 12. All-day School, operate in parallel to the ordinary primary school, with an extended and enriched timetable.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia7 Secondary education level is available in two cycles: Compulsory Lower Level Secondary Education offered at Gymnasiums and Post-compulsory, Upper Secondary Education which is offered by the Unified Lyceums and Technical Vocational Educational Institutes.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia8 The compulsory secondary education is provided in Gymnasium, which lasts for 3 years: from 12 to 15 years of age. The upper secondary education (not compulsory) is provided through two types of institutions: General Lyceum / GL and EPAL Vocational Lyceum. The frequency in both types of school lasts 3 years. At the end of Class3 the pupils take examinations both at school and national level with a view to obtaining the Unified Lyceum Leaving Certificate respectively. There are also EPAS, professional schools, the frequency of which lasts for 2 years.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia9 Holders of the Unified Lyceum Leaving Certificate may seek employment in the public / private sector. may seek admission to the Universities, by sitting the annual national examinations in 2 general knowledge subjects and in four orientation subjects. may attend public or private Vocational Training Institutes to obtain a Training Certificate equivalent to a post-secondary vocational training qualification.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia10 Tertiary education Tertiary education is divided into : University education available from Universities and non-university education, which is offered by Higher Technological Educational Institutes and Higher Educational Institutes. Postgraduate courses are also available at Tertiary education level.

Gymnasium of Megala Kalyvia11 The university sector, includes Universities, Polytechnics and Higher School of Fine Arts. The technology sector, includes Higher Technological Education Institutes and School of Pedagogical and Technological Education. The universities are fully self-administered legal entities of public law that are financed and supervised by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs.
