Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level 3 SI O S The goals of SIOS WP 6 The main objective of WP 6 is to build up an effective, easily accessible data management system which is fully compatible with and makes use of existing data handling systems in the thematic fields covered by SIOS. The second major goal is to develop a strategy and propose practical means how to facilitate and promote the utilization of these data in research and other user communities. One of the major problems : Wide spectrum of scientific fields, which, to a large degree, have developed individual solutions of data handling.

This must contain a definition of SIOS data sets, submission requirements (timeliness, data centres, file formats, documentation etc), potential access and use restrictions as well as potential logging requirements. A first draft will be worked out during the first project year [ Month 9 ] Supported by other major data providers (NPI, NERC, METNO, IMR, SU)

Infrastructure providers & potential user community will be addressed using an electronic questionnaire to collect information on potential future SIOS relevant datasets. The meta-information found will be made available online. Supported by full and associated partners representing major discipline branches (IOPAS, AARI, University of Leicester, UNIS, NPI, University of Tromsø)

Interoperability technologies applied within European or global interoperability networks, enables SDMS to connect to existing data catalogues. Machine interfaces to relevant data centres and archives will be identified and implemented. The SIOS Data Management System will harvest relevant metadata from existing data centres & archives. Supported by UNIS, AARI, IMR, METNO, EISCAT, and SU

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level 9 SI O S Task 6.4: Design the SIOS Data Management System and implementation in the SIOS Knowledge Centre Lead PI: NERSC SDMS will/ must be a truly distributed data management system utilising existing infrastructure and relevant systems, although harvesting the meta-information provided in other systems The SIOS Data Management System (SDMS) will be a functionality-enabling component of the Knowledge Centre, supporting data submission, discovery, access, use and preservation of SIOS relevant data sets It will be assisted by partners with considerable experience in data base work: METNO, AWI, NPI, NILU, UNIS (where most PM were allocated)

Click to edit Master title style Click to edit Master text styles Second level Third level Fourth level Fifth level 10 SI O S Task 6.5: SIOS data utilisation plan Lead PI: AWI Supported by (associated) partners with outreach experience (Svalbard Science Forum, Arctic Centre-University of Lapland) and University partners (UNIS, UIB, RUG). Identification of relevant user communities of SIOS datasets  followed by the definition of procedures to make SIOS datasets available to relevant communities, e.g. the Earth System Modelling community ( by, for example, workshops, newsletters, public events, etc.) General guidelines on how project scientists and other interested persons can be assisted in using the SIOS data archive Existing relevant data and meta-information available will be compiled, and mechanisms to harmonize these datasets into common units, accessible formats, and uniform variables will be proposed.
