A simple machine is a device that helps reduce the amount of force required to do work. Work is done when a force (effort force) is applied over a distance.
Work and Simple Machines. Work Work means to (1) apply a force to an object over a distance, and (2) the object moves in response to the force. If something.

Principles of Engineering Alex Egan

What is a Simple Machine? A simple machine is a non-motorized device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force.

Lever Pushing down on one end of a lever results in the upward motion of the opposite end of the fulcrum. Examples: Door on Hinges, Seesaw, Hammer, Bottle Opener

Wedge Wedges are used to split things. They can also be used to change direction. Examples: Axe, Zipper, Knife

Pulley A wheel that usually has a groove around the outside edge. This groove is for a rope or belt to move around the pulley. Pulling down on the rope can lift an object attached to the rope. Examples: Flag Pole, Crane, Mini-Blinds

Incline Plane A sloping surface, such as a ramp. An inclined plane can be used to alter the effort and distance involved in doing work, such as lifting loads. Examples: Staircase, Ramp, Bottom of a Bath Tub

Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder. This inclined plane allows the screw to move itself or to move an object or material surrounding it when rotated. Examples: Bolt, Spiral Staircase

Wheel and Axel A wheel and axle has a larger wheel connected by an axle and is fastened to the wheel so that they turn together. Examples: Door Knob, Wagon, Toy Car

Rube Goldberg Machine A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device, or apparatus which is a over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complicated fashion, usually including a chain reaction.
