A Remnant Shall Return Captivity, Return, and Years of Silence

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego Daniel 3 – the last story mentioning these 3 men (1:6-7, 11-13, 17-20; 2:17, 49). When did this occur? – Not certain… – Chronologically after chapter 2? – LXX and Theodotion translation – attempt to reconcile with Jer. 52:29 – no textual evidence

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv. 1-7 – Vs. 1 – Golden image – 90 feet high and 9 feet wide; plains of Dura (a plain near the city of Babylon) – Vs. 6 – Threats given to incite obedience

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv – Vs. 15 – “And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?” – 2:47 – Vs. 16 – Shadrach, Meshach and Abed- Nego were not concerned with what Nebuchadnezzar thought concerning their decision (Matt. 10:28).

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv – Vs. 17 – They state their trust in God to deliver them from: 1) the furnace and 2) the hand of the king. – Vs. 18 – In spite of what God might or might not do for them, they were going to remain faithful to Him!

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv – Vs. 22 – second time we have seen an “urgent” command of the king costing the lives of other people (2:12-13, 15). – Vs. 25 – “the Son of God” – other translations: “a son of the gods” – a supernatural being?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv – Vs. 27 – “they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power” – Vs. 28 – Nebuchadnezzar is once again convicted of the power of Jehovah (2:47). – Vs. 29 – another “harsh” decree…

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego vv – So far, Nebuchadnezzar has seen God’s wisdom (2:47)… – Now He has seen His ability to deliver from destruction and earthly authority (3:17). – Vs. 30 – The irony – the story ends with a promotion of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego!

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed- Nego Important Lessons: – Fear of God over fear of man (3:16, 18). – Trust in God (3:17). – God’s ability to deliver (3:28-29).
