Conscience is that internal part of us that informs our oughts and ought nots.

In a relationship of shared conscience, you don't have to have many rules/laws. There is a consensus around right and wrong.

“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.” Romans 2:14-15

What informed our national conscience?

The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln:... that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom... [Under authority. Accountable to.]

The Pledge of Allegiance: In the 1950s, lifted from Lincoln's address and added to the Pledge-- One nation, under God...

In 1956, the 84th Congress passed a joint resolution to replace the existing motto with "In God We Trust."

Coinage: In 1964, "In God We Trust" was printed on coins

There are two other lines forming. 1.Those who recognize God as the ultimate source of our provision and those who do not. 2.Those who are not ashamed to say, "In God we trust" and those who say, "In government and American ingenuity we trust. In 'we,' we trust."

Accountability to God and God talk has fallen out of favor.

“The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the L ORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house? Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” – 2 Kings 4:1-2

“ Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”– 2 Kings 4:3-4

“ She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.” – 2 Kings 4:5-6

“ She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.” – 2 Kings 4:7

Are we willing to stand for what Jesus stands for or are we going to continue to allow the worlds views, ideals, and ways crowd over Jesus’ views, ideals and ways?
