Luke 10:25-37 25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luke 10:25-37 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Luke 10:25-37 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Luke 10:25-37 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

Luke 10:25-37 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:25-37 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.

Luke 10:25-37 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.

Luke 10:25-37 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

Luke 10:25-37 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

Luke 10:25-37 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

“Stewardship” means: Using God given ability to manage God given resources, to accomplish God ordained results.

Money? (resources)  Giving money to the church is not stewardship, it’s merely a part of stewardship.  You can’t be a steward without giving it though.

Ministry? (ability)  What you do in ministry for God is not stewardship. It is a part of good stewardship.  You can’t be a steward without being involved in it.

If stewardship isn’t about what I give or what I can do... what is it all about?

It’s about the heart! Good stewardship comes from the attitude that stands behind all you do.

It’s not what you give or what you do... it’s the why behind it all that makes you a good steward.

The parable of the good Samaritan is a parable about the attitude of stewardship. Three attitudes on display:

1. What’s YOURS is MINE and I’m going to take it. Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.” (Luke 10:30 )  Even the world understands this is wrong.

8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the L ORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” (Malachi 3:8-10 )

2. What MINE is MINE and I’m going to keep it. 31 “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.” (Luke 10:31-32 )  Who were these guys?

3. What’s MINE is YOURS - I’ll share it with you. 33 “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’” (Luke 10:33-35 )

Samaritan - “trained” in ministry?  Wealthier?  Nothing to do?

What made the difference? ATTITUDE!

The Samaritan’s attitude helped him: 1. Overcome his prejudice. 2. Ignore the inconvenience. 3. Give up his possessions to take care of this man. His attitude was what made his story worth telling!

What’s the right attitude for a good steward of God? You don’t own it, you take care of it and manage it for God.

To be a good steward I have to realize that I don’t own...  1. My Time  2. My Money  3. My Possessions  4. My Relationships They are ALL His!

“There is not one square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” (Abraham Kuyper)

“I keep this nail with my money to remind me of the price Christ paid for my salvation and of what I owe Him in return.”

10 b Test me in this, says the L ORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the L ORD Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the L ORD Almighty. (Malachi 3:10 b -12 )

If the promise was good for those under the Law... how much more do you think God will be faithful to those of us under Grace?

“Rules of Ownership”

If I like it,

IT’S MINE!

If it's in my hand,

IT’S MINE!

If I can take it from you,

IT’S MINE!

If I had it a little while ago,

IT’S MINE!

If it looks just like mine,

IT’S MINE!

If I think it's mine,

IT’S MINE!

If it's yours and I take it,

IT’S MINE!

17 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share. (I Timothy 6:17-18 )
