God Delivered Isaac from Death Firm Foundations Lesson 18: God Gave Isaac; God Delivered Isaac from Death Memory verse: Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD,        And besides Me there is no savior.

Introduction Abraham believed God, God accepted Him as righteous Abraham’s faith was greatly tested

God fulfilled His promise: A son Abraham & Sarah too old to have children Abraham was 100, Sarah: 90 God promised them a son Nothing impossible with God Many years had passed since God promised God never forgets His promises Genesis 21:1-3 Named him Isaac God is the giver of life Isaac belonged to God, just like everything else 1 And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. 2For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac.

God commanded Abraham to offer Isaac Isaac grew to be a lad (young man) Father and mother loved him Abraham believed that God’s promises were to be delivered through Isaac Genesis 22:1-2 God was testing Abraham Did he love Isaac more than God? What right did God have to command this? God gave life to all, has authority over all living things 1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!"     And he said, "Here I am."     2Then He said, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

Abraham believed God What was God doing? Did God change his mind? How could the Deliverer come through Abraham now? Abraham believed and obeyed God Knew God wouldn’t lie Knew God kept His promises Hebrews 11:19 Compare to Adam & Eve & their command Genesis 22:3-5 “rose early in the morning” “to the place which God had told him” 19concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. 3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5And Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the lad[a] and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you."

Isaac questioned, Abraham answered Genesis 22:6-7 Isaac knew about sacrifices The reason for them Expected to find a lamb Genesis 22:8 Abraham trusted God Abraham acted on his faith 6So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "My father!"     And he said, "Here I am, my son."     Then he said, "Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 8And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So the two of them went together.

Abraham bound Isaac Genesis 22:9-10 No escape Abraham lifted the knife to kill him Only God could save him Like Noah on the ark Like Lot in Sodom Only God can save us 9Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

God provided a ram in Isaac’s place Genesis 22:10-12 God saved Isaac Abraham needed a suitable sacrifice in Isaac’s place Genesis 22:13 God provided a sacrifice Ram caught by horns – not injured God is faithful Kept promise to Abraham Provided sacrifice Saved Isaac 10And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.     11But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!"     So he said, "Here I am."     12And He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." 13Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

Abraham trusted God to send the Deliverer Genesis 22:14-19 Abraham called this, “The Lord will Provide” Believed God would provide Deliverer 14And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide;[a] as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided."     15Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16and said: "By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son-- 17blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." 19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

Conclusion This was a difficult test God rewarded Abraham’s faith God provided an acceptable sacrifice Line of promised Deliverer was preserved God keeps His promises
