3 rd Level Writing Writing Paragraphs

UEQ What is pre-writing and why is it important to the writing process?

LEQ List the various ways that we have learned to organize our ideas. How do writers extend their sentences? What does it mean to sequence your writing?

Prompt Tell about a time when you and a friend did something special together.

Brainstorming What do you remember about the best time you ever had with a friend? Where did you go? What did you do? What was the most exciting part? Why will you always remember it? Think about the 5 Ws: who, what, when, where, and why. Use a CIRCLE MAP.

Races with Shawn speedway Car race food Last year North Carolina hotdogs pizza Pit crews Checkered flag High fence

Organizing What categories can we use to organize the information in the Circle Map to our TREE MAP? We will need 3 categories that most of our ideas can fit in. Draw a TREE MAP.

Races with Shawn speedway car racefood

Sequencing Putting items in order Tell what happened first, next, and last. Details in a story happen in an order that makes sense

Sequencing Write an opening PARAGRAPH that tells who, did what, when/where, and why. The opening paragraph should have at least 2 sentences. Who: Shawn and his family What: invited me to the races When: last year Where: Metrolina Speedway, NC Use a FLOW MAP.

Last year my best friend Shawn invited me to go with his family to the races. We went to Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, NC. speedwaycar racefood

Extend with Details Can you elaborate more about each of your categories? Can you add descriptive words or phrases to help the reader see your story? Fill in under each category with details (nouns) and descriptions (adjectives.)

Last year my best friend Shawn invited me to go with his family to the races. We went to Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, NC. speedway car racefood Oval black track Pits with crews Stands with high fence Starting gun Lead kept changing Checkered flag Men with boxes Variety hotdogs/pizza People with coolers like us

Write a Closing Paragraph Add a closing PARAGRAPH that tells how you felt, your opinion, what you hope, why you will never forget it, etc. Your closing paragraph should wrap up your essay, and be at least 2 sentences long.

Last year my best friend Shawn invited me to go with his family to the races. We went to Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, NC. speedwaycar race food Oval black track Pits with crews Stands with high fence Starting gun Lead kept changing Checkered flag Men with boxes Variety hotdogs/pizza People with coolers like us After this experience I will be a race fan forever. Dale Earnhart Jr. just got a new fan!

Write Your Story Write your story by taking your information off of the Flow Map. Each box becomes a PARAGRAPH. Each detail become a sentence. Your completed writing should now have 5 paragraphs.

Last year my best friend Shawn invited me to go with his family to the races. We went to the Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, NC. The speedway was much larger than I had anticipated. There was a wide oval shaped black track in the middle of a large field. Around the track there were areas called pits where mechanics worked on cars that were having trouble during the race. Between the racetrack and the stands for the people there was a high metal fence for protection.

I have never seen cars zoom as fast as they did during that car race. The drivers began the race when they heard the starting gun that sounded as loud as a firecracker. As the men were racing, the lead kept changing over and over. The same man that had started the race with the loud gun ended the race by waving a black and white checkered flag. All during the race, men with large boxes around their necks went up and down the steps in the stands selling food to the fans. They sold everything from hotdogs to piping hot pizza. We didn’t buy any food because we had brought our lunch with us in a cooler.

After this experience I will be a race fan forever. Dale Earnhart Jr. just got a new fan!
