What I will be talking about… A brief history –Free World Affair – US Air force Role in Vietnam The Vietnam War’s Effect on American Literature Black Panthers The effect of media coverage and the war Brief Video-leaving you with something to think about

A Brief History: A Free World Affair Vietnam was considered a “Testing Ground” for the spread of Communism; The Viet Cong where being influenced by the Communist countries China and Russia US officials wanted the fight against the spread of Communism to be a “Free World Affair.” An international effort with aid from countries such as Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and The Republics of China, the Philippines, Thailand, and others also provided aid to the US in the form of “advisory or civic roles.” According to Dr. C’s assigned reading from helium.com, the Vietnam War started in 1954 when Communist North Vietnam began to attack South Vietnam with means for invasion.

A Brief History: US Air Force Role in Vietnam There were issues between the Army and the Air Force regarding control or air operations. Senior Army Officials felt that their air support should be controlled by ground commanders and should not have to go through air force control stations. While the Army’s early strategy in Vietnam was to Search and Destroy the Viet Cong and later to ensure the promotion and spread of democracy. The Air Forces Role in Vietnam strategic persuasion, and strategic aerospace power against guerilla warfare-stop the flow of resources to the Vietcong and demolish their will to continue fighting.

The Vietnam War’s effect on American Literature Vietnam Era literature did not surface until the late 70s and early 80s. The Literature was written as “personal narratives” from individuals that experienced the war such as soldier and medics. The focus of Vietnam Era Literature was to exploit the realities of the US’s involvement in Vietnam and the conflicted views for our troop presence there.

The Black Panthers The Black Panther Party or (BPP) founded by Huey P. Newton and his close friends: Bobby Seale and David Hilliard. Organization started in urban California, from my research I believe it was Oakland, CA. The BPP was formed for “Self Defense.” reasons The BPP wanted equality and an end of suppression of African Americans. They believed that the US government was an enemy to them as well as to the people in Vietnam.

The effect of media coverage and the war Reporters and editors began to question officials for the first time regarding US military operations. Television was becoming more common in American homes, war scenes that were projected were often negative and graphic. The American public was being bombarded with struggles from the war front night after night. This was the influential news source of the American Public that diminished their support of US military presence in Vietnam.
