 Great Engineer  Creative Planner  A Project Manager par excellence  Architect of Modern India  A person with strong value system  A fine human being

5 “ People enjoy what technology can do for them while often ignoring what it can do to them” --Edward Wenk

6  Engineering is that profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. (ABET, 1992)  Engineering is the professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of the resources of nature to the uses of humankind. (Encyclopedia Britannica)

7 The Narrow Definition  Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economic structures, machines, processes, and systems  Engineering is the science and art of efficient dealing with materials and forces... it involves the most economic design and execution... assuring, when properly performed, the most advantageous combination of accuracy, safety, durability, speed, simplicity, efficiency, and economy possible for the conditions of design and service.  Engineering is the practical application of science to commerce or industry

8  Strong technical capability  Skills in communication and persuasion  Ability to lead and work effectively as a member of a team  Understanding of the non-technical forces that profoundly influence engineering decisions  Commitment to lifelong learning  Skills in design and project management  Multidisciplinary

1. Design products. 2. Design Plants in which those products are made. 3. Design the systems that ensure the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process. 4. Design, plan and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, transit systems. 5. Develop and implement ways to extract, process and use raw materials such as petroleum and natural gas. 6. Harness the power of the sun, and wind to satisfy the nations power needs. 9

 As An analyst  As A designer  As An Innovator  As An integrator  As A social catalyst

Requires specialized and highly skilled knowledge. Requires academic training. Requires examination of competence. Function of professional work is vital to society. Professionals enjoy higher social status. Professionals must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of legal and ethical conduct. Requires Continuing education to keep current with rapidly changing technology. 11

12  Is Engineering more like Natural Science or more like a field of studies in the Humanities?  Engineering is intimately connected to the humanities because it is the application of scientific theory to solve certain problems of humanity—namely it’s need for technology  Engineering as Liberal Arts !

 Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar, Gwalior Fort  Howrah Bridge  Bhakra Nangal Dam  Golden Quadrilateral Project  Konkan Railway/ Delhi Metro  Nano Car  Indian Nuclear Mission  Indian Space Mission

 15 years to complete  Used Project Management Skills  Finest Example of Symmetry, Engineering Accuracy, Precision

 Established in 1995  Phase I(67.5 km) and Phase II(125 km) as route length  Investment of US$ 2.3 Billions  Began construction in 1998 and completed Phase I in 2006 (3 years ahead of schedule)  There are 6 lines, and a total of 142 stations  Today a fleet of 280 coaches with 70 trains run daily  Learnings : Project Management Skills, Timeliness, Quality, Safety, Concern for Environment

 Climate-Change Responsive Technologies for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development  This acknowledges engineer’s contribution in society, his/her responsibility for inclusive growth and making sustainable development possible

AdjectiveExample WiderSocial Networking DeeperUnderstanding about technology LongerLife Expectancy LighterHand Held devices SaferTravel BetterQuality of Life

 I will  Tell people about the creative aspects of Engineering  Promote the Collaborative nature of Engineering  Talk about how engineering makes difference

Thank you very much ! I would appreciate your comments at Happy Engineer’s Day
