Topic 12 Light

Lesson 5: Refraction of White Light

Experiences and Outcomes of Lesson Draw a diagram to show the effect of a prism on white light. State that white light is made up of all the colours shown in the visible spectrum. Identify the red and blue/ violet ends of the visible spectrum. State that TV screens produce white by mixing the 3 primary colours.

Experiment Aim: To investigate the effect of a prism on white light. Method: White light Prism

Results: When white light enters and leaves the prism it is refracted into a spectrum of colours.

White Light White light is not a single colour. It is made up of a mixture of the seven colours of the rainbow. The primary colours of light are red, blue and green.

Visible Spectrum Red and blue/ violet are at opposite ends of the visible spectrum.

T.V. Screens Produce white light by mixing the three primary colours as shown below: Colorado 2000
