England This is the biggest part of United Kingdom. There live 83 % of British population. The capital of the country – London is in England. There is Welsh in the West and Scotland in the North.

Robin Hood in the literature Robin Hood became a popular folk figure in the late-medieval period, and continues to be widely represented in modern literature, films and television.

Robin Hood in the literature He is a character from a medieval legend about a man who lived in Sherwood Forrest, he robbed the rich and helped the poor. He lived in the forrest with a group of his companions called Merry Men. His closest friends were Little John, Much the Miller’s Son, Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck. Robin was in love with Maid Marian.

Robin Hood in the literature Robin Hood was an outlaw when the country was ruled by a king's brother John. The king Richard the Lionheart was away at the Third Crusade. Robin was a great archer, he was brave and kind too.

Robin Hood in the literature People from a village loved him because he helped them and protected them from a greedy Sheriff of Nothingham. He and his Merry Men always fought for justice and they had a lot of adventures. From the story we can learn a lot about life in medieval England.

Robin Hood in the history We don’t really know if he existed but the story of the brave and kind man from Sherwood Forrest has been known for 600 years.

Robin Hood in the history His legend is probably based on the life of Robin Hode who lived in York and became an outlaw in 1225 year. According to documents from XIV – XVI centuries he was a great archer and swordsman, a leader of a group of men who lived in forrests of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. He robbed rich aristocrats in their castles and helped the poor.

Robin Hood in ballads and tales The earliest surviving text of a Robin Hood ballad is "Robin Hood and the Monk". This is preserved in Cambridge University manuscript. It was written shortly after It contains many of the elements still associated with the legend, from the Nottingham setting to the bitter enmity between Robin and the local sheriff.

Robin Hood in ballads and tales The Victorian era generated its own distinct versions of Robin Hood. The traditional tales were often adapted for children, most notably in Howard Pyle's The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which influenced accounts of Robin Hood through the 20th century. These versions firmly stamp Robin as a philanthropist, a man who takes from the rich to give to the poor.

Robin Hood in films Many films and cartoons are based on the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. For example the animated Disney film Robin Hood from 1973 with the title character is portrayed as an fox. There are also many films for family. The 1976 British-American film Robin and Marian, starring Sean Connery as Robin Hood and Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian.
