Speakers: Jimma University – Dr. Abraham Haileamlak Mbarara University - Dr. Sam Maling Walter Sisulu – Dr. Jehu Iputo Kwazulu Natal University - Moise Muzigaba

Defining Community Engagement …the process of working collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the well- being of those people …It often involves partnerships and coalitions that help mobilize resources and influence systems, change relationships among partners, and serve as catalysts for changing policies, programs, and practices (CDC, 1997, p 9)

Community Engagement

Community Engagement in CBE Challenges and Sustainability Objective: To examine the strategies of community engagement among African medical schools with a focus on challenges and opportunities in sustainability. Speakers: Jimma University – Dr. Abraham Haileamlak Mbarara University - Dr. Sam Maling Walter Sisulu – Dr. Jehu Iputo Kwazulu Natal University - Moise Muzigaba

Questions for Discussion What are the most suitable non-financial incentives that can sustainably be used to keep communities engaged in CBE? How can we make best use of the short time allocated to CBE to engage community members in identifying their own health problems and work with health care providers towards alleviating the burden of disease in these communities? How feasible is it to embed health professions training within the health systems in sub-Saharan Africa?
