5 th seminar of sound and audiovisual archives, Mexico City, November 2011 E U R O P E A N A What is EUROPEANA ? ?  A common multilingual and digital access point to Europe’s cultural heritage  Stimulated and co-ordinated by the European Commission  Users will be enabled to search different collections in Europe’s cultural institutions in their own language through a web portal (without having to visit multiple sites or countries) search is free of charge 2

Whom is EUROPEANA aimed at?  Anyone interested in European cultural resources such as literature, history, arts, music, cinema, books, maps, newspapers, manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, records, photographs, films, radio, TV, and the like. The challenges: INTEROPERABILITY - INTERDISCIPLINARITY - MULTILINGUALITY  End-users: experts and professionals as well as citizens, researchers and scientists as well as school children, students as well as teachers. 4

It holds legal power and reports on finance & strategy.. The Supervisory Board makes decisions and pays contributions fixed by the EB. 9 Purpose: to provide cross-domain access to Europe’s cultural heritage EUROPEANA governance (2010) Statutes The daily business is conducted by the Europeana Office, accommodated at the Royal Library of the Netherlands in The Hague.
