Nehemiah 5:1 Now there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers. 2 For there were those who said, "We, our sons and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain that we may eat and live." 3 There were others who said, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our houses that we might get grain because of the famine." 4 Also there were those who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our fields and our vineyards. 5 "Now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

6 Then I was very angry when I had heard their outcry and these words. 7 I consulted with myself and contended with the nobles and the rulers and said to them, "You are exacting usury, each from his brother!" Therefore, I held a great assembly against them. 8 I said to them, "We according to our ability have redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?" Then they were silent and could not find a word to say. 9 Again I said, "The thing which you are doing is not good; should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies? 10 "And likewise I, my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Please, let us leave off this usury.

11 "Please, give back to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money and of the grain, the new wine and the oil that you are exacting from them." 12 Then they said, "We will give it back and will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say." So I called the priests and took an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. 13 I also shook out the front of my garment and said, "Thus may God shake out every man from his house and from his possessions who does not fulfill this promise; even thus may he be shaken out and emptied." And all the assembly said, "Amen!" And they praised the LORD. Then the people did according to this promise.

Main Point: How to deal with sin in the Church. Background: Presumably during wall building— internal strife as opposition from Satan.

God’s rule for Israel regarding the needy Leviticus 25:35 'Now in case a countryman of yours becomes poor and his means with regard to you falter, then you are to sustain him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you. 36 'Do not take usurious interest from him, but revere your God, that your countryman may live with you. 37 'You shall not give him your silver at interest, nor your food for gain. 38 'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.

God’s rule for Israel regarding slavery Lev. 25:39 'If a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to you that he sells himself to you, you shall not subject him to a slave's service. 40 'He shall be with you as a hired man, as if he were a sojourner; he shall serve with you until the year of jubilee [7 th year]. 41 'He shall then go out from you, he and his sons with him, and shall go back to his family, that he may return to the property of his forefathers. 42 'For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale. 43 'You shall not rule over him with severity, but are to revere your God.

God’s rule for Israel regarding slavery Deuteronomy 15:12 "If your kinsman, a Hebrew man or woman, is sold to you, then he shall serve you six years, but in the seventh year you shall set him free. 13 "When you set him free, you shall not send him away empty-handed. 14 "You shall furnish him liberally from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as the LORD your God has blessed you.

What the Bible really says about slavery FACT: Old Testament forbids making Jews into actual slaves (Lev. 25:39-43; Deut. 15:12-14) FACT: Although Jews were allowed to take foreigners as permanent slaves, even they were protected: could not abuse them; if hit slave and knocked out a tooth, slave went free (Ex. 21:26-27) escaped slaves (presumably especially including non- Jews) could not be returned to their masters but were regarded as freedmen (Deut.23:15-16) FACT: New Testament puts even stricter requirements on masters of slaves (Eph. 6:9) FACT: New Testament encourages getting out of slavery if possible (1Cor. 7:21-23) FACT: Influence of the Bible & Christianity led to the abolition of slavery, first in the West, then from there in the rest of the world

Nehemiah angry: God angry! 6 Then I was very angry when I had heard their outcry and these words. Nehemiah directly rebukes sin: God rebukes sin! 7 I consulted with myself and contended with the nobles and the rulers and said to them, "You are exacting usury, each from his brother!“

Nehemiah publically rebukes sin, insists on specific, immediate repentance: God commands us to repent 7…Therefore, I held a great assembly against them. 11 "Please, give back to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money and of the grain, the new wine and the oil that you are exacting from them.”

Nehemiah warns of judgment: God will judge the unrepentant! 13 I also shook out the front of my garment and said, "Thus may God shake out every man from his house and from his possessions who does not fulfill this promise; even thus may he be shaken out and emptied." And all the assembly said, "Amen!" And they praised the LORD. Then the people did according to this promise.

Matthew 18:15 "If your brother sins, [Step 1] go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 "But if he does not listen to you, [Step 2] take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. 17 "If he refuses to listen to them, [Step 3] tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Nehemiah 5: 7 I consulted with myself and [Step 1] contended with the nobles and the rulers and said to them, "You are exacting usury, each from his brother!" Therefore, [Step 3] I held a great assembly against them.

God’s work in removing sin from His people 1. Committing of sin (the Law broken) violation of general moral conscience violation of God’s revealed Law 2. Persisting in sin Conscience / Bible willfully ignored 3. Consequences of sin often suffering in the lives of others harm to God’s work & God’s name 4. Conviction of sin rebuke from spiritual leader needed here applies to all professing believers

1 Corinthians 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so- called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler -- not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God judges. R EMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES.

5. Rebuke leading to conviction finally produces: FEAR (a blessing!) GUILT feelings (a blessing!) 6. Repentance from sin. The nobles: STOPPED loaning at interest (greed, selfishness) RESTORED what had been taken, freed slaves (justice) Implied: LOANED money and grain at no interest (love)

7. Accountability to prevent future sin v.12: Then they said, "We will give it back and will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say." So I called the priests and took an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. Spiritual leaders should proactively offer accountability Repentant sinners should humbly receive accountability

Application: Deal with sin in the Church! in your own life in your family (especially if you are the father) in your own church or ministry activity (especially if you are a leader).
