The Tudors of England Lesson #6

How kings get to be kings Must be IN the family of kings Rule by “divine right” Rule passes from father to son Some countries let daughters become “king” (monarch) If no sons or daughters…

Divine Right King’s ruled by “DIVINE RIGHT.” That meat that people believed that God gave the kings the right to ruler over them.

The Tudor monarchs Henry VII Henry VIII Edward VI Mary I Elizabeth I (a monarch is a king OR queen who has all the power) Henry VII Henry VIII Edward VI Mary I Elizabeth I

Henry VII He was NOT in line to be king (he was cousins He fought his cousin, Richard of York in a war called THE WAR OF ROSES His last name: Tudor Started the “Tudor line” of kings He married the _______ to the king he defeated Had two sons, two daughters They would all be officially heirs because of his marriage

Henry VII All of them will matter a lot after he dies Henry VII was not very much fun He preserved power and wealth for his kids Henry VII had four kids Two sons ARTHUR HENRY Two daughters MARGARET MARY All of them will matter a lot after he dies

TUDOR ENGLISH FAMILY TREE Henry VII Elizabeth of York Margaret Mary Jane Seymour Henry VIII Arthur Catherine of Aragon ANNE BOLEYN Edward VI Elizabeth I Mary I (Bloody Mary)

Henry VIII Henry VIII was much more “fun” than his dad He went hunting, and competed against other kings in tournaments He had lots of girlfriends, too But, he was OBSESSED with having sons He died with only one… a sickly young boy All three of Henry VIII’s kids became kings (monarchs) of England First Edward Then “Bloody” Mary Then Elizabeth “the Virgin Queen Two versions of Anne Boleyn click click

EDWARD became king at age 10 He didn’t do much before he died at age 16 His advisors made the Church of England more like Luther’s church He was too young and too sickly to marry He had no kids Who would rule next?!

Mary became queen when she was older She was raised a Catholic When she became queen, she brought the Catholic Church back She married Philip of Spain She killed anyone who protested Protestants would later called her “BLOODY MARY” because she killed so many protestants She died after five years – no kids

ELIZABETH … was the only child of Anne Boleyn But, became queen and changed the Church back to Protestant she ruled so that you could be any religion you want She encouraged trade and culture She ruled 42 years 4 times as long as Mary and Edward combined The whole Elizabethan era is named after her

Big events during Elizabeth: Shakespeare and other arts flourished England became rich from trade Elizabeth challenged Spain, the mightiest empire, and won! England established its first colony: VIRGINIA, named after her She never did get married She never did have kids

Next in line… Elizabeth had no kids How do you figure out who should be next?...
