St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14 th of February.

This day is celebrated in many countries. St. Valentine’s Day has roots in several legends.

Many years ago the Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he felt that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars.

At that time there was a kindly priest named Valentine. He couldn’t agree with the emperor’s decision.

When he saw that young couples were truly in love, he married them secretly.

Valentine had been thrown in prison for his teaching. On the 14 th of February he was beheaded.

He performed a miracle- he cured the jailer’s daughter from her blindness the night before he was executed - but he wrote a letter to the girl, signing it “From your Valentine”.

One of the early symbols of love is Cupid, the Roman God of Love, who is represented as a young boy with a bow and arrows. CUPID

One of the symbols of this day is a red rose. This day people traditionally give these flowers. The Goddess of Love hurried to her lover and stepped on a bush with white roses. She wounded her foot. Her blood made the roses red. Since that time the red roses are the symbol of love.

The heart is the symbol of this day – the sweets are made in the form of heart, in the form of heart the cakes are baked. This day people send small paper hearts – the Valentines cards which always begin with “ I love you…”.

Pigeons are favorite birds of Venus and has long been known as love birds. They do not change the life, and a pair of them care of chicks. These birds are the symbols of true love, care and happiness in marriage.

In Africa, birds of love are colorful parrots. Most of them have a red beak. They are called the birds of love because when they are in pairs, they sit in a very short distance from each other.

On St. Valentine’s Day boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours will exchange greetings of affection, undying love or satirical comment, called valentine cards.

The messages are signed “From your Valentine” or “Be My Valentine”.

Although I know that friendship reaches Far across the miles I’d still be glad to see one of your warm and friendly smiles. And though I know The times we’ve shared will last within the heart. I can’t help wishing We weren’t so far apart!

All the presents have the form of a heart. These are cards, candy, balloons.

There is a valentine box at the valentine party. Usually it is just a hat box or a big shoe box decorated with paper. Each boy or girl takes a turn reaching into the box.

Young men by lottery chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities.

In Germany girls tried a different way of finding out who they would marry. They planted onions on St. Valentine’s Day. Each girl tagged onions in a corner near the fire- place. She thought she would marry the man whose onion sprouted first.

St. Valentine’s Day is a holiday for men. Women make presents for their lovers. They give them shaving sets, pocket- books, gloves.

This holiday is the most popular holiday among young people. It is the day of lovers. This day young men and women declare their feelings for each other. Valentine’s Day cards and romantic flowers such as red roses are sent.

These messages are always left unsigned. The cards may be happy or sad, romantic or humorous. They may be sent to all people you know.

People in England send their massages to animals, cats, dogs.

Children try to get a lot of presents. They sing love songs near houses.

This day is not an official holiday, but most Americans like to celebrate it. This holiday Americans give special symbolic gifts ( usually candy or flowers) to people they love. They also send special greeting cards called Valentines to such people.

These days a lot of red roses are sold in America.

In Italy men give their women chocolate and sweets. The day is called a sweet Day.

In France St. Valentine’s Day is one of the greatest Holiday. This day husbands give their wives jewels.

This day isn’t an official holiday in our country. It is celebrated only some years. It has come from Europe, but it is very popular among young people. Boys and girls exchange valentine cards and declare their feeling. They make each other presents in the form of a heart and roses.

There is a country where it is forbidden to celebrate this holiday. It is Saudi Arabia. If people don’t fоllow the law they have to pay fines.

The people are observing a custom that began more than 2000 years ago. It’s wonderful to think many people have said “Be My Valentine!”
