Macbeth William Shakespeare

Terms The play is a tragedy, which means it has a sad ending and a tragic hero. Tragic hero—basically a good person, but they have a flaw which destroys them. Macbeth’s flaw is ambition (he is power- hungry).

Facts The play is loosely based on 2 real-life kings. It is set in Scotland. As the play begins, Duncan is the King of Scotland. Macbeth is one of his generals and the Thane (Lord) of Glamis. A war between Scotland and Norway is underway.

Inspiration The play was written as a gift to King James. Banquo (a character from the play) was his ancestor, and James was a big believer in witches, which appear in the play. Its setting, Scotland, was James’ country of birth.
