Told yourself, “I’ll look on Facebook for just 5 more minutes and then do my homework?” Done something else “very important” to avoid working on an assignment? Promised yourself, “I’ll stop procrastinating tomorrow”? Been so worried about doing a task that you couldn’t do something that you were already scheduled to do?

Putting things off until a future time What makes you procrastinate? Why do we do it? Overwhelmed with so much responsibilities and tasks Not clear about expectations Lack of interest Fear of not doing well

Scenario: It is the first day of your Public Health C129 (The Aging Human Brain) class and the professor assigns a 20-page research paper that is due in one month. How would you approach this?

Break down mountains to smaller hills Choose topic Gather sources and conduct research Prepare outline First draft Seek professor or GSI feedback Seek academic support services on campus Final draft Set personal deadlines (and keep them!) Allow for cushion time Use free time wisely

Set realistic goals Get to know yourself Do school work when energy at its highest Find your study niche(s) on/off campus Library Coffee shop Home Skipping class = MORE stress Miss class notes Missed valuable information not found in textbook/readers Need time to catch up

Semester calendar – course deadlines from course syllabus, quizzes, exams, big deadlines Weekly Schedule Fixed commitments – classes, meetings, appointments Work schedule (if applicable) Visually see open blocks of time Make Lists All activities, not just coursework Discover what system works for you!

What are the deadlines? What/who is involved in getting these tasks accomplished? It’s okay to say N-O For certain appropriate tasks and responsibilities What is important to you?

Avoid study marathons aka “all-nighters” Sleeping SAVES time Sleep deprivation slows you down during the day Reduces falling asleep in class Reward yourself for finishing tasks on time Schedule time for YOURSELF! Exercise, relax & socialize Don’t worry so much!

Undergraduates Students: Student Learning Center (SLC) Tutoring Services in Residence Hall Professor and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) office hours Graduate Students: Graduate Division Academic Support Services Dissertation Writing Grant Writing Editing Professor office hours

What is the big picture? Allow time for family, friends and YOURSELF You live in the Bay Area – take advantage of it!

Skills learned in college can help you in your career and in life!
