While Nurses Excel in Practice, They Also … Develop and provide education to interprofessional team members, patients, families, communities Conduct research on end-of- life/palliative care issues Lead advocacy efforts to support this work

AACN’s Response to the 2014 IOM Report, Dying in America Recommendation #3: Professional Development & Education Provide education in palliative care, communication, interprofessional collaboration, pain and symptom assessment/management Educate nursing faculty so students graduate with palliative care knowledge and practice Accredited nursing programs must include palliative care education

AACN Leads the Way in Palliative Care Education 1997: Developed end-of-life competencies for undergraduate nursing students 2000: Partners with the City of Hope National Medical Center to develop End-of-Life Nursing Education (ELNEC) curriculum with funding from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 2001: First national ELNEC train-the-trainer course held in Pasadena, CA

Developing Nursing Faculty 2002 – 2006: Over 400 graduate nursing faculty attended the ELNEC-Graduate course (65% of graduate programs represented) 2007 – 2013: More than 100 ELNEC courses held 2013 – 2017: Over 180 faculty and clinical partners attended the ELNEC training on Integrating Palliative Oncology Care Into Doctor of Nursing Practice Education and Clinical Practice ( funding by the National Cancer Institute)

Latest Achievements…. 2015: Updated end-of-life/ palliative care competencies for undergraduate students with funding from the Cambia Health Foundation 2016: Developing an online ELNEC-for Undergraduate Students curriculum; available January 2017 through Relias Learning
