Since 1983, ALRP has handled over 50,000 legal matters for people living with HIV/AIDS. Our staff and Panel of over 700 volunteer attorneys help our clients in a variety of legal areas, including housing, employment, credit, insurance, family law, confidentiality, and government benefits. ALRP

ALRP helps our clients by: Preventing unlawful evictions Preserving employment Securing health and disability insurance Protecting assets Reducing stress and improving health Assuring personal dignity ALRP

HIV infection often brings unexpected and confusing legal problems. ALRP client services staff can help avoid or solve many of the legal issues that arise by providing: -Info about the legal rights of people with HIV/AIDS -Referrals to qualified attorneys -Direct legal representation -Mediation CLIENT SERVICES

Stable, affordable housing is crucial for people living with HIV/AIDS to manage their health ALRP helps people with HIV/AIDS facing threats to their housing, including evictions, discrimination, habitability defects, unlawful rent increases, and refusal to provide a reasonable accommodation HOUSING

Many people living with HIV/AIDS depend upon health and disability insurance when they become sick. ALRP can assist them with their insurance-related legal issues. Issues may involve disputes with an insurance company concerning claims, levels of coverage, pre-existing conditions, and denials/termination of coverage. Insurance & Employee Benefits

ALRP can prepare legal documents -WILLS - ensure that people with HIV/AIDS have someone of their choice carrying out their intentions with regards to distribution of their property and instructions for their funeral and burial -DURABLE POWER of ATTORNEY – authorizes another person to manage one’s financial affairs. -ADVANCE HEALTHCARE DIRECTIVES - designates a trusted agent to make medical decisions on behalf of another person, should they become incapacitated. WILLS AND POWER OF ATTORNEY

Many people with HIV/AIDS experience some degree of financial hardship due to their medical condition or inability to work. ALRP can help clients manage debt-related problems by negotiating with creditors and reviewing all legal options, including bankruptcy. CREDIT & DEBT

ALRP can assist people with HIV/AIDS with a range of issues related to government benefits, including SSI and SSDI eligibility and overpayments. GOVERNMENT BENEFITS

A person with HIV/AIDS may face discrimination in the workplace or need a reasonable accommodation at work in order to remain employed. Federal, state and local laws protect people with HIV from discrimination in employment. ALRP can help make sure people with HIV can secure and retain employment. EMPLOYMENT

Some people with HIV/AIDS prefer not to disclose their HIV status to certain individuals or groups. Certain relationships contain a duty of confidentiality, prohibiting disclosure of someone’s HIV status without permission. ALRP helps clients whose confidentiality has been illegally breached. PRIVACY/CONFIDENTIALITY

For many immigrants with HIV/AIDS, being forced to return to their country of origin may put their health or safety at risk. The ALRP Immigrant HIV Assistance Project (IHAP) provides legal services to immigrants and asylees with HIV/AIDS living in the Bay Area. IMMIGRATION

In order to reach traditionally underserved populations within the HIV/AIDS community, ALRP conducts outreach, targeting women, people of color, transgenders, and people with mental disabilities. ALRP provides legal services in a culturally sensitive manner to underserved communities. COMMUNITY OUTREACH

ALRP collaborates with many community partners to ensure that clients receive the services they need. Current partners include: AIDS Housing Alliance AIDS Project of the East Bay API Wellness Center Black Coalition on AIDS La Clinica de la Raza Native American Health Center Positive Resource Center San Francisco AIDS Foundation PARTNERSHIP
