Chapter 2 One Dimensional Motion Displacement and Velocity

Chapter 2 Objective Understand the concept and practice with displacement, velocity and acceleration Learn, derive and practice with 4 constant acceleration formulas Warm Up Jesse Owens ran a 100meter dash in 10.3 seconds. If speed is simply distance/time; what is his speed. Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals in sprint and long jumps in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. What was happening in Germany in 1936,what was soon to unfold? bout/ bout/

Modified Physics 500 pg 19 Lab Objective: Calculate displacement, velocity and acceleration Materials: you, meterstick, stopwatch Procedure: Develop a plan that will enable you to calculate the distance traveled for each race and the time it takes each runner to travel that distance. Two students will race each other by running, hopping, jogging, skipping….you can decide the activity. Rotate roles so that each person will have a chance to calculate. Data: Complete the chart ActivityName of Student Displacement in meters ( final distance- initial distance) Velocity m/s (displacement/ change in time) Acceleration m/s 2 (velocity/ change in time) RunJohnBill calc. Motion Motion is Relative An object is moving if its position changes when compared to a fixed point.

Displacement -Write formula on board -Displacement is length not total distance because it can = 0 -It can be + or – -It is a vector

Velocity -Formula -Vector (+/ - / rest) -Not speed Constant Velocity Instantaneous V = Avg V= slope Non- Constant Velocity In this case the V at any point (inst.V) will differ from average. So you find the slop of the tangent line (at multiple points) to actually find the Avg V

Acceleration -formula, units, derive -Constant A; slope= A -A=0 at Constant V= straight line - + vs - A
