Motion Notes

Key Terms 1)Motion: 2)Reference point: The state in which one object’s distance from another is changing. A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion.

Key Terms 3)Distance: 4)Displacement: The length of a path between two points. The length and direction that an object has moved from its starting point

5)Vector: 6)Speed: 7)Average Speed: 8)Instantaneous speed: 9)Velocity: A quantity that consists of both a magnitude and a direction. The distance an object travels per unit of time. To calculate speed, divide distance traveled by amount of time. An objects overall rate of speed; calculated by dividing the total distance and object travels by the total time. The speed of an object at any given instant. Speed in a given direction. http://www.stmattsai nts.org/velocityacceler ation.htm

How to find Speed, Distance or Time http://www.stmattsai nts.org/velocityacceler ation.htm

10)Slope: 11)Acceleration: The steepness of a line on a graph, equal to its vertical change divided by its horizontal change. The rate at which velocity changes with time.

11)Acceleration: The rate at which velocity changes with time. In science acceleration refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed and changing directions.

12)Calculating Acceleration: Acceleration = Final Velocity – Initial Velocity Time Acceleration = 8 m/s – 0 m/s 2 s Acceleration = 4 m/s 2

13)Graphing Acceleration: Remember: Slope = Rise Acceleration = 4 m/s 2 Run Slope = 4 m/s 1 s
