Scientist Engagement NASA SMD Education Community Meeting Sept , 2015

What Best Practices Were Noted? Cheri’s menu of opportunity for SMEs (update for the current era) Play to the strengths of SMEs Provide training/resources and support for SMEs (make it easy for them to share their work) Tap the energy and abilities of younger SMEs Be careful to not overuse your favorite SMEs Leverage technology (use the interwebs [social media], hyperwalls, other exciting tech) to reach large audiences Get universities to buy in to have faculty scientists Give recognition to the SMEs Select a diversity of SMEs to represent NASA, can be role models for students

Legacy Educator Ambassador Programs with deep SME engagement Pat’s course Partnership with educators and scientists is key The 1-2% rule created a large group of professional scientist-educator s. Use them.

What Lessons Learned Were Shared? Making sure there is a real audience for the SME Make sure the logistics (including the internet) of SME presentation are going to work. Always have a back-up

What TYPES of Impacts Were Noted? Who was reached and how? Current engineer used Pat’s space weather CD as a student (anecdotal evidence) SME getting a thank you letter from students Number of SMEs seeking us out is increasing Attitudinal surveys following an event with a SME Greater recognition of importance of E/PO among SMEs (more sessions on E/PO at professional conference, PSI survey) Early career scientists report positive impacts on their career advancement from participating in E/PO program SMEs learning to communicate their science better

What NASA Resources Were Leveraged? Rusty – SMEs who did 10 minutes talks on webinars, created NASA wavelength lists to match the SME presentations. Sten – Math guides on Wavelength. Science content from press releases. GSFC Exhibits – SMEs are the talent for exhibit content, and review content Pat – planetarium shows, SMEs review content, SME interviews, kiosk content STScI – SMEs participate in teams development of for exhibits, EPD, curriculum Paige – Webinars with interactive SME presentations for students NASA Earth observatory and visuals, GLOBE Mission Data

Additional Thoughts Who was here: Sanlyn, Leon, Pat, Bard, Bonnie, Exhibit group, Sten, Eric, Rusty, Greg SMEs should allow themselves to allow their participation to evolve.

Parking Lot Thoughts or Questions Re-evaluate the model of the value of putting scientists in the classroom How do we provide incentives for SMEs to participate? Can NASA leverage SMEs private interests
