OBJECTIVES Explain the difference between prejudice, discrimination and racism Understand how prejudice is used to maintain social distance

WHERE DO PREJUDICED IDEAS COME FROM Cultural determinism: People are the way that they are based on a deviant culture Economic determinism: People are engaged in a culture of poverty Stereotypes All those blank are blank. Stereotypes are simplified generalizations that are used to define groups, group behavior and other social conditions.

HOW DO STEREOTYPES BECOME RACIALIZED? Ethnophaulism—derogatory word or expression used to describe a racial or ethnic group. 1.Disparaging names 2.Alleged physical characteristics or attributes used to otherize 3.Alleged behaviors

WHAT INFLUENCES STEREOTYPES? T.V. and the way in which that informs normatives. Heteronormativity Racism Mysogeny Homophobia

WHAT ARE ELEMENTS OF PREJUDICE? Prejudice is to make a pre-judgment about person or group based on biased thoughts or idea generating processes. It is to apply a stereotype. 1.Cognitive 2.Emotional 3.Action oriented 4.Self-Justification

HOW IS PREJUDICE RATIONALIZED? Scapegoating/blaming the victim. Deterministic beliefs like: People like that deserve… Or Mike Brown should have never robbed a liquor store, etc… Scapegoating condemnations in particular come from a patriarchal perspective whereby victims are perceived to be in need of guidance and correcting in order to correct their problems.

HOW DOES PREJUDICE LEAD TO AGGRESSION In cases where action is followed by displaced aggression, research has found that to be a product of frustration. Relative deprivation-a lack of resources or rewards which leads to a process of scapegoating and pursing action against the perceived cause.

HOW DOES PREJUDICE LEAD TO DISCRIMINATION? Judgments about people lead practices based on those notions. The perceived is believed to be real and thereby lead to real outcomes. Ex: Racial Profiling The hidden curriculum Homophobia Sexism Ableism

CONSIDER THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN MR. X AND MR. Y X: The trouble with the Jews is that they only take care of their own group Y: But the record of the Community Chest campaign shows that they gave more generously, in proportion to their numbers, to the general charities of the community, than did non-Jews X: That shows they are always trying to buy favor and intrude into Christian affairs. They think of nothing but money; that s why there are so many Jewish bankers. Y: But a recent study shows that the percentage of Jews in the banking business in negligible, far smaller than the percentage of non-Jews. X: That’s just it; they don’t go in for respectable business; they are only in the movie business or run night clubs.

PREJUDICIAL PATHWAY Bias is created Bias is rationalized as prejudice Prejudice is attached to existing stereotypes Frustration is filtered through cognition and emotion Discrimination is seen or practiced as a justifiable action.
