Solving Inequalities (1-6)

What is an inequality? 1-6 Inequalities have a less than ( ), less than or equal to ( ) SIGN Key words include –Less than: is fewer than, is under –Less than or equal to: is no more than, is at most –Greater than: is more than, is over –Greater than or equal to: is no less than, is at least

Find all of the possible solutions (solve). Draw a number line. –You do not have to put all of the numbers. –You DO need to put a 0 in the middle and the number from the solution. Where you put the number, you have two options: –open circle o for –closed circle for ≤ and ≥ Then shade in the direction of the possible solutions. To graph an inequality with one variable… y > 4

Solving Inequalities with Addition and Subtraction 1. y – 2 < < t + 12

Solving Inequalities with Multiplication and Division 3. 2s < 424. –4d < -12 When you multiply or divide by a negative; switch the sign!!!

Solving Inequalities with Multiplication and Division 5. > -26. > -6

Solving Inequalities with Multiplication and Division 7. ≥ 08. ≤ -3

Solve and graph. 9) 15 – 3x > 310) 4x + 14 < 3x + 6

Solve and graph. 11) 4x – 5 < 4(x + 2)12) 2(3x – 1) > 3(2x + 3)

Write an inequality, then solve. 13) You have budgeted $100 to improve your swimming over the summer. At your local pool, it costs $50 to join the swim association and $5 for each swim class. Write and solve an inequality to find the possible numbers of swim classes you can attend within your budget. Let x = the # of swim classes

Today’s Vocabulary: inequality, less than, greater than, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to, open circle, closed circle
