Nervous System The adult human brain weighs between 1300 g and 1400 g (approximately 3 lbs). The Automatic Nervous System is most important in two situations: 1. In emergencies that cause stress and require us to "fight" or take "flight" (run away) and 2. In non-emergencies that allow us to "rest" and "digest“.

The Digestive System The digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. Our food and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before they can be absorbed into the blood and carried to cells throughout the body. Digestion involves the mixing of food, its movement through the digestive tract, and chemical breakdown of the large molecules of food into smaller molecules.

The Circulatory System The heart beats around 3 billion times in the average person's life. About 8 million blood cells die in the human body every second, and the same number are born each second. Within a tiny droplet of blood, there are some 5 million red blood cells, platelets and white cells. It takes about 20 seconds for a red blood cell to circle the whole body. Red blood cells make approximately 250,000 round trips of the body before returning to the bone marrow, where they were born, to die. Red blood cells may live for about 4 months circulating throughout the body, feeding the 60 trillion other body cells

The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. When we breathe, we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. This exchange of gases is the respiratory system's means of getting oxygen to the blood. The Respiratory System Your lungs contain almost 1500 miles of airways and over 300 million alveoli. Every minute you breathe in 13 pints of air. Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Thank goodness!

The Skeletal System The average human adult skeleton has 206 bones. The skeleton plays an important part in movement by providing a series of independently movable levers, which the muscles can pull to move different parts of the body. It supports and protects the internal body organs. The bones are also a storehouse for minerals. Babies are born with 270 soft bones.

Everybody has them, but not many people talk about them. Some people call them their "privates," and others just kind of blush and whisper, "down there." But the truth is that your reproductive parts aren't any weirder or any more cause for embarrassment than say, your feet or your eyes - it's just that they're covered up most of the time. The reproductive system gets its name from the fact that its parts allow a person to reproduce, or have a child. The Reproductive System
